STUDENT HANDBOOK

Discipline Plan

In order for the students to be successful socially, academically and emotionally, they are expected to follow classroom rules and to live by the Northwoods Elementary Expectation of cooperation, courtesy, respect, responsibility and safety.  Wake County School Board policy states:

A school climate conducive to serious study and respect for oneself, other people and property is essential for a school to meet the needs of youth.  Each principal has the authority and responsibility to take whatever reasonable and legal action is necessary to establish and maintain appropriate student behavior in accordance with Board policy.

Any student who breaks a rule or expectation will be reminded which rule has been broken.  If the unacceptable behavior continues, consequences may be put in place.  Emphasis is to be placed on helping the student develop appropriate behaviors.   Unacceptable behaviors that violate student expectations at Northwoods are as follows:

  • Verbal or physical abuse
  • Destruction of property
  • Intentional disruption of class

Strategies used at Northwoods to help students may include the following:

  • Time out
  • Conference with the student and/or teacher and/or parent and/or principal/assistant principal
  • Behavior contracts
  • Telephone calls between/among the teachers and/or parents and/or principal/assistant principal

Fighting, destruction of property and threatening behaviors that endanger the safety or impede the learning environment of oneself and others will not be tolerated.  Students who violate these conditions will be referred immediately to the school administration for further action.  If there is a reasonable belief that certain acts of crime and violence have occurred on school property or at school sponsored events, school administration is required to call local law enforcement.

At Northwoods Elementary School we strive to create a safe, healthy, happy learning environment for all students.  Students and parents are informed of behavior expectations.  When problems occur, the following discipline program is used:

Level One Behavior Problems

Minor behavior problems are those that staff members can take care of immediately.  Natural consequences and problem solving will be used.  If there are consistent problems the student may receive a level one-discipline report.

Level I behaviors are minor infractions that staff members can take care of immediately.  These include such things as refusal to complete work, disrespect, and playground misconduct.  Natural consequences and problem solving will be used.  Parent contacts will be made when necessary.  If there are consistent problems with these, the student may receive a discipline report.

Possible Level 1 Consequences
One of the following may occur:

  • Apologize
  • Practice a better choice
  • Time out to problem solve
  • Loss of choice at recess, loss of free time, or privileges, with practice to develop better choices
  • Completing a problem-solving plan
  • Talking through the problem solving process
  • Conference with teacher
  • Phone call to parent for support
  • Individual academic plan

Level Two Behavior Problems

Persistent Level 1 behaviors and/or more serious behaviors result in a Level II consequence.  These behaviors are more serious because they stop children from learning, are dangerous, are disrespectful, or are seriously detrimental to a safe learning environment.

Possible Level 2 Behaviors

  • Persistent level 1 behaviors
  • Serious disruption
  • Harassment
  • Destruction of property
  • Theft
  • Fighting (Verbal or physical)
  • Skipping class
  • Intimidation
  • Falsification of signature
  • Defiance to School Personnel
  • Obscene or vulgar gestures

Possible Level 2 Consequences
One of the following may occur:

  • Parent will be contacted by the administration
  • A student, staff, principal contract can be made together
  • Temporary removal from classroom
  • Out of school suspension (followed by parent-student and school staff conference)
  • Parent-Teacher-Student conference
  • Referral to the Student Support Team
  • Referral to the guidance counselor

The staff at Northwoods will meet with teachers and parents to work through problems that have not been resolved.

The Student Support Team is a forum where a team of staff members and a child’s parents discuss further ways to help a child.

Level Three Behavior Problems

Persistent Level 2 behaviors and more serious, unlawful behavior, result in Level 3 consequences.  Behaviors at this level are extreme and warrant measures to insure the safety and well-being of all children.

Usually when a student reaches this level he/she has had many people helping them at all levels.  Serious measures must be taken to give the student parameters.  This helps him/her understand that he/she needs to be a responsible member of the community.

Possible Level 3 Behaviors

  • Persistent level 2 behaviors
  • Drugs
  • Extreme defiance
  • Serious destruction of property
  • Dangerous items/weapons
  • More than 3 removals from classroom in three weeks

Possible Level 3 Consequences
One of the following may occur:

  • Parents will be contacted by the principal
  • Suspension followed by a re-entry conference with parent/student/school staff
  • Behavior Plan and monitoring of behavior
  • Discipline and due process, as required by the Wake County School District
